There are a bunch of neighborhoods near the lake, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Andersonville, Boystown, Edgewater, and these are all by the red line. River north is nearby, it's upscale and feels more like a neighborhood, if that appeals to you. However there are major shopping districts nearby, and you are close to the lake. It's largely a business district, and when the business day is over, lots of businesses are closed. All of the housing is dense high rises, which isn't my style, though the views are killer. The Loop (aka downtown) itself has never appealed to me as a neighborhood, though all train lines run to/through the Loop.

This was 8 years or so ago, though, things may have changed so YMMVīiggest question, do you want to live in the city, or the suburbs? There are a ton of great neighborhoods in the city, where you can be close to train lines, of which the blue line (runs downtown to O'Hare) and red line (runs up and down the city near the lake) are most popular. I missed the "summer energy" of the city when I moved, but not the hassles. When I drove in the winter I hated it, when I took the train in warmer weather it was better.

I lived in Lincoln park (no I am not rich, it was just a studio apt) and worked literally off the cumberland blue line stop. If you will have a car, from either dp or park ridge you can easily drive to a blue line stop and make it to the city, but won't be inconvenienced by the few things living in the city that annoyed me (street parking, trying to carry large loads of geoceries from my car to the apartment, smaller places for more money, old buildings with shitty landlords, thin walls). Oh, and stay away from apartments too near Allstate arena, imo. Sit in your car for an hour after the viewing and see what the noise level is like. I would stick in Des plaines or around, or park ridge if you can find a place near downtown that is affordable (not sure your price range), thats a nice area too and apts buildings are generally well maintained (just be cautious of air traffic patterns, like everyone said.
